What is Autism?
Autism looks like...
Autism is a 'spectrum', there is a wide variation in the extent of symptoms people experience. Autistic individuals may have:
-
difficulties communicating and interacting effectively with others
-
unusual or intense interests
-
sensory issues
-
repetitive speech or movements
-
a struggle to manage changes in routines
Autistic individuals may also experience extreme emotions and can become overwhelmed. For young people this may manifest in 'meltdowns' or 'shutdowns'.
Autism, a definition
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopment disorder that alters how people communicate, learn, and interact with the world.
Facts and Stats
Our autistic approach
We have a multi-disciplinary team who conduct ASD assessments using the ‘Gold Standard’ of assessment tools which meets all NICE guidelines and provides a recognised medical diagnosis.
Autism comes from...
Ultimately, researchers don't know exactly what causes autism! Although studies suggest that genetics combined with environmental factors can come together and affect development in ways that lead to ASD.
Keep in mind... parents who have a neurodevelopmental condition are more likely to have a child with autism.
