What is Autism?

Autism looks like...

Autism is a 'spectrum', there is a wide variation in the extent of symptoms people experience. Autistic individuals may have:
  • difficulties communicating and interacting effectively with others
  • unusual or intense interests
  • sensory issues
  • repetitive speech or movements
  • a struggle to manage changes in routines

Autistic individuals may also experience extreme emotions and can become overwhelmed. For young people this may manifest in 'meltdowns' or 'shutdowns'.

Autism, a definition

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopment disorder that alters how people communicate, learn, and interact with the world.

Autism comes from...

Ultimately, researchers don't know exactly what causes autism! Although studies suggest that genetics combined with environmental factors can come together and affect development in ways that lead to ASD.

Keep in mind... parents who have a neurodevelopmental condition are more likely to have a child with autism.

Sir Anthony Hopkins

Oscar-winner, Anthony Hopkins was diagnosed with autism in his late 70's.

Notable People with Autism

Autism and...

Most autistic individuals have at least one other co-occurring condition. This could be:
  • Neurodevelopmental condition, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Mental health conditions, such as anxiety and low mood
  • Learning needs, such as dyslexia or processing speed

Every young person is different.

Autism interventions

Early intervention is key. Our bespoke interventions focus on using the right strategies to set young people up for a fulfilling life.

Aren't we all a "little bit autistic"?

Having these ideas often comes from a place of love, acceptance, and a wish to understand. However, it can minimise the challenges that autistic people face.
