What happens in our Autism Assessments?
We understand the idea of coming for an assessment can be worrying for some children and their families. We cannot tell you exactly what will be asked in the evaluation, as it would influence the outcome. However, we can outline the process and the people involved.
Our private ASD assessments are coded by at least three clinicians, enabling consideration of a range of aspects to assess this complex disorder with its wide variety of symptoms. The assessment itself includes two in-person sessions: one with your child and another with parents or caregivers. After the assessment, we’ll meet to explain the results, discuss the next steps, and guide you in supporting your child. Additional support and interventions are available if needed.
While we can't change the process or the diagnostic tools, our experienced team personalise and supports you and your child through the process. We are available to answer your questions and provide support throughout - some examples of how we have supported other families include:
-
How to speak to your child about the assessment process
-
Providing photographs of our space and team so the child can see where they will be and who they will meet
-
What a diagnosis means for you, your child and the people around them
-
Support for you and your child if the diagnostic criteria are not met
-
Suggested next steps and further support
What will I receive after the assessment?
Following the assessment, we will share the Clinical Report with you. This report outlines the results for each of the diagnostic criteria and provides an overall result (diagnosis). After you have had time to review the report, we will schedule a feedback meeting with you. This is your opportunity to discuss the results and ask any questions you may have. We can also make recommendations for next steps or further support.
The Child Psych understands that an Autism diagnosis is for life, so we can support you and your child to understand the diagnosis, identify their autism strengths and start to see how their amazing brain works. We also look to the future and offer the option of a "privacy-friendly" report with less personal information, which could be used in the workplace HR setting in the future if needed.
We understand that getting the result can take time to digest, so we work with you at your pace.
Is an ASD Assessment your next step?
We appreciate that deciding whether an ASD assessment is right for you or your child can be challenging. We offer two routes into our private ASD assessments:
1. Book an ASD Assessment directly with no waiting lists (£2,800)
2. Book an 'Ask the Expert' consultation (£350) focused on determining whether an ASD Assessment is an appropriate next step, or explore other possible explanations. The cost of this will be deducted off a subsequent ASD Assessment booking
